I get it, you can't always get to the studio for a session AND there are times when you need to be able to submit an image of yourself for one reason or another. Most digital CEO's NEED a lot of images to run their businesses. For example, I need to have at least one session every two months in order to keep up with the demand.
This isn't the reality for most. However I think it would be safe to say that these days we are asked for images more often than we used to be. Every time one of those requests come in you really can't be giving them the same image you have used for the past four years.
What can you do when you don't have time to have a session? Follow these tips and you will look your best in a crunch.
1. Use your self timer of have someone take the images for you.
2. Follow the same clothing tips as if you were coming to the studio
3. Follow the same hair and make up tips as if you were coming to the studio
4. Clear the background. Yes I know you can blur the background on newer phone cameras but please don't do that. In most cases this just doesn't look good. Better to clear the background.
5. Take the image from many different angles and poses. Hold the camera a little above the eyes, then a little below the eyes, pull back to get more torso, pull in close, go vertical and horizontal, smile with teeth showing, smile with lips gently closed, don't shoot head on, turn your head to the left, then to the right. So many options. Take ALL of them.
6. Shoot into the dark. This means have your face be the lightest part of the image. I know that you see many images where there is a window behind the subject, leave that lighting scenario to the professionals.
7. Speaking of light, use one or stand in front of a great big window. Window light is going to be the most flattering but sometimes you may not have one. Almost all of us have ring lights or we know someone who does. Use one for your photos. TIP: don't put it straight in front of you, place it to the side a little bit above eye level for more natural light with lovely shadows.
8. Make sure you are in focus.
9. Take a lot. Really, you might need to take a 100 or even 200 before you have a couple you like.
10. Have fun!!
These are all great tips to keep in mind if you need to do this on your own. BUT . . . selfie sessions are not an alternative for a professional session with a photographer who specializes in branding sessions. When you are ready, click that button below and get you schedule for a great session that will show you are your best!
