You want to know the #1 question or concern that I hear from my clients? I bet you can figure that out by the title of the blog post but I will tell you anyway. The first thing that most people say to me when we are discussing a session is: "I just do not feel comfortable in front of the camera." This question is so predictable that I expect it and I know exactly what to say when it comes up.
Let's face it, no one feels comfortable in front of the camera. I know this so I build time into my sessions to allow for my clients to take a breath, get used to the surroundings, and breathe before we officially start shooting.
Here is the truth, most people don't have extensive experience posing for the camera. We aren't taught this in school and unless we are younger than 25, we haven't practiced taking selfies since the age of 5. Younger generations have this down but the older folks, myself included, need a little help.
That is where I come in. Here are some tried and true ways to feel more comfortable in front of the camera.
1. Choose clothing that you feel GREAT in! Really. We all know how great it feels to wear something this flattering, fits well, and is in a great color. Choose those kinds of things for your session.
2. Practice posing in front of a mirror. You photographer will help you with posing but only you know what you like best. So practice in the privacy of your own home. Set your camera on a counter or tripod, set the self timer and click away. You will soon discover your preferred side, best facial expressions, and body poses. Then bring those options to your session and your photographer can perfect them so you look your best.
3. Get your hair and make up done by a professional. I provide my clients with a list of great hair and make up artists that they can trust. They can hire someone from that list or hire their own. I usually do not recommend just walking up to a cosmetic counter at the department store 40 minutes before the session and expecting them to perform miracles. Those artists are talented BUT their job is to sell you make up. Hiring an independent professional whose primary goal is to make you look great for your session is key.
4. Put on some music. I love having music on during a session and will usually ask what my client prefers. If hard rap is your thing, let's turn it up and have some fun.
5. And when all else fails, bring a friend who can drive and we can pop some bubbly to relax the room a bit.
Use these tips for your next business session and I know you are going to look great!!!
